OCM Genesis - The 10k Collection of Firsts

OnChainMonkey is the cutting-edge innovator in digital artifacts, spearheading records and achieving several industry-leading firsts since inception in September 2021.

Genesis was inscribed onto Bitcoin in inscription number 20219. This inscription number signifies the year and month when Genesis launched on Ethereum back in September (9) of 2021.

Genesis consists of 10,000 unique digital artifacts inscribed onto Bitcoin back in February of 2023, the early days of Ordinals. In this article, we get the privilege of exploring the many firsts achieved within the Genesis collection.

First 10k collection inscribed on Bitcoin

Inscription 20219 made it’s famous debut on February 8th, 2023. OCM Genesis attained a monumental achievement by utilizing Parent-Child Provenance before it existed, later becoming a standard on Ordinals protocol.

In other words, the team at OnChainMonkey inscribed the Genesis collection (10k images) onto Bitcoin in the most low-cost, efficient way possible without clogging up the Bitcoin block space.

First 10k collection to use Parent-Child Provenance

As mentioned above, Parent-Child Provenance is a highly significant property existing within the Genesis collection. Parent-Child Provenance, or simply provenance, was built into Genesis before the feature was truly available, let alone an Ordinal standard.

As a result of early inscription utilizing provenance (pre-jubilee), the awakening of cursed inscriptions / sats came alive on Ordinals. More to come on cursed sats later on in the article.

With provenance, collectors can now identify which inscriptions (children) correlate with their parent inscription(s). If provenance on Bitcoin did not exist, there would not be a true sense of collections, as each inscription would be on it’s own without clear, identifiable parents.

First 10k collection inscribed on Block 9 sats

Genesis was inscribed onto block 9 sats, the shortened term for satoshis. A satoshi is the smallest unit of value on the Bitcoin blockchain. Why is block 9 particularly significant? Block 9 contains some of the earliest sats that were mined by Satoshi Nakamoto himself back in January of 2009.

Each block 9 sat is significant because they are some of the earliest sats in existence and therefore some of the most rare. Inscribing data onto block 9 sats creates an immense value proposition for digital artifact collectors.

First 10k collection inscribed on 450x sequential sats

450x sats are considered prime real estate on Bitcoin. OnChainMonkey creator, Danny Yang, says it best in regard to 450x sat inscriptions:

“Bitcoin and Ordinals are both about one thing, "stacking sats." Collecting the floor sats, or collecting the grail rarest sats.

OCM Genesis was designed around the sat and creating the rarest sats: 45017800001–45017810000.

These 10k sats are in the 99.999999th percentile of earliest ranges, and the first 10k range to be inscribed ever on Bitcoin.

First 10k collection inscribed on sequential sats.”

First 10k generative art collection created on-chain from the sat number of the inscription

Every Genesis monkey was generated (by code) on-chain with the sat number matching the inscription. In other words, each Genesis monkey’s number correlates with a matching sat number.

Four Genesis collections were inscribed in the same sat range, so they are bound together and trade together.

For example, monkey #7638 is assigned to sat number 45017807638. Genesis #10,000 secures the last number in the sat sequence, 45017810000.

Collectors appreciate the fact that their digital artifact and their sat number matches perfectly no matter which asset you acquire in this exquisite collection.

First 10k collection to include on-chain metadata for each inscription using the Ordinals metadata standard

Metadata is what digital art collectors know to be the “traits” of a particular collection. For Genesis, each monkey has a set of traits correlating to the hat, clothes, eyes, earring, background, and mouth.

Metadata is what makes each digital artifact in the collection unique, as no two monkeys have the exact same set of traits.

Genesis is the first 10k collection to include on-chain metadata for each inscription using the Ordinals metadata standard. According to Ordinals.com:

Metadata is human readable, and all metadata will be displayed to the user with its inscription.

Many investors / collectors who look at Genesis will view the series of metadata, or traits, to help determine which one they will trade for or purchase directly on the secondary market.

First 10k collection to have multiple parents using Parent-Child Provenance

Parent-child provenance is so significant that we mentioned it a few times in this article. Genesis is the first 10k collection with more than one parent. As with the traditional family unit, two parents are present in the home.

Parent inscription numbers 20219 and 464551 are used in relation to their child inscriptions. Four child inscriptions are included in each of the 10k Genesis monkeys which always stay together on-chain.

First 10k reinscribed collection

Reinscription refers to inscribing data onto a chosen sat multiple times over instead of just once. In terms of digital artifacts, reinscription gives the ability to add multiple pieces of art to a single satoshi, which is exactly what OCM Genesis did.

Genesis was the first 10k collection that was inscribed not twice, but four times. Each Genesis monkey comes with four separate inscriptions that all trade together:

1.) OCM Genesis: Perspectives

2.) OCM Genesis: 20219

3.) OCM Genesis: Deconstructed

4.) OCM Genesis: Certificate of Ownership

First 10k to utilize distribution via recursion

Recursion is an important part of Ordinals as it allows for a permissionless App Store on Bitcoin. We saw this with the release of OCM Dimensions as the inscriptions include functionality for compression and 3D development tools by current and future app developers.

The Genesis collection was the first 10k collection to utilize recursion via distribution of all 10,000 child inscriptions towards the end of 2023.

Recursion allows inscriptions to reference, or call, a previous inscription both for increased speed and space-efficiency on-chain.

First 10k cursed collection

What does it mean when the word, “cursed” is mentioned regarding Bitcoin? Specifically, the word refers to cursed satoshis. Cursed satoshis are satoshis that contain cursed inscriptions, or artifacts of early Ordinals.

Symbol for cursed inscriptions

OCM Genesis was the first 10k collection on Bitcoin that was cursed over 3 times due to utilizing parent-child provenance, reinscription, distribution via recursion, and being placed on block 9 – 450x sats back in February of 2023.

Genesis is the rarest 10k collection in that it is first and cursed.

First 10k on-chain PFP collection created using a single Ethereum transaction

OnChainMonkey has always been a digital artifact project even though it started on a different blockchain. Back in 2021, Ordinals on Bitcoin did not exist, so Ethereum was the next best option to use as a medium of art.

Genesis was the first 10k PFP collection created on-chain in a single Ethereum transaction. All 10,000 monkeys were generated from code and displayed as images on the Ethereum blockchain all at one time.

On-chain collections are significant since assets remain on the Ethereum blockchain instead of simply pointing to an NFT like some ETH collections.

First 10k collection to officially migrate from Ethereum to Bitcoin

Not many can grasp the level of technical prowess it takes to migrate a 10k collection from one blockchain to another.

Ethereum and Bitcoin are two vastly different blockchains, both with distinct properties and consensus mechanisms.

OCM was the first to migrate their 10k collection over to Bitcoin after a long period of planning and implementation, considering all possibilities such as any risks and potential harm to the community / future members.

Multiple migration portals have been open at various times since late last year. OnChainMonkey has streamlined the process for holders where their monkeys can easily make their move over to Bitcoin.

Final Words

The best way to conclude this article is with a snippet from an official OnChainMonkey post on X, back in November of 2023:

“Genesis embodies the convergence of art, technology, and innovation, creating a masterful fusion of digital artistry with the blockchain as the canvas.

Poetically engineered, collectors and onlookers alike can appreciate the timeless aesthetic of the OCM Genesis and its abstract art collection, both generated on-chain through code.

As more details are revealed, the story of the upgrade process and all it entails will come to be appreciated as art in itself.

Inscribing multiple collections onto a targeted sequential block 9 sat is Bitcoin native art at its core, immortalized onchain for all to marvel.
